Ecopsychology is an interdisciplinary field exploring the deep connection between humans and the natural world. It recognizes the interdependence of ecological and psychological well-being, emphasizing how human behavior impacts the environment and vice versa. It seeks to restore the bond between humans and nature for mutual health and well-being.

Dr. Michael J. Cohen and Project NatureConnect

Project NatureConnect (PNC), founded by Dr. Michael J. Cohen in the early 1980s, offers experiential learning methods that enable individuals to reconnect with nature in profound and meaningful ways. PNC has contributed significantly to the field of applied ecopsychology, offering methods, tools and techniques that combine sensory awareness with ecological principles.

Rooted in Dr. Cohen’s pioneering work in outdoor and sensory-based education dating back to the 1960s, PNC emphasizes the importance of engaging our senses to deepen our relationship with the natural world. This approach stems from the belief that humans are intrinsically part of nature, and our disconnection from it not only contributes to ecological harm but also to emotional imbalances, mental health challenges, and societal issues. PNC encourages a shift in values toward a more nature-centered approach to living, understanding this as essential for addressing global environmental challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation.

Dr. Cohen’s philosophy highlights how direct sensory experiences in nature can restore emotional balance, foster ecological stewardship, and promote holistic well-being. PNC inspires participants to explore the transformative and healing power of nature, advocating for a lifestyle that embraces interconnection and sustainability. Through this work, Dr. Cohen has empowered countless individuals to rediscover their innate bond with the Earth, offering a pathway to personal and ecological harmony.

Natural Attraction Ecology

Natural Attraction Ecology is a concept developed by Dr. Cohen, based on the idea that humans have an inherent, evolutionary, biological attraction to the natural world, which is essential for both personal well-being and ecological health. This principle aligns with the scientific understanding that all matter, at its core, consists of particles with inherent attraction forces. Dr. Cohen’s approach suggests that humans, as part of nature, are innately drawn to these natural attractions, and they are calling us. By connecting with them, we can rediscover harmony within ourselves and our larger body, Earth.

When we engage with the aspects of nature that we are naturally drawn to—or feel called to explore more deeply—the attractions can serve as gateways to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place and role in the world. These experiences activate our senses in ways that may promote self-awareness and growth, inner peace, emotional clarity, and a greater sense of interconnectedness.

Greensong Ecopsychology

Greensong Ecopsychology, established in 2012, draws heavily from the principles and practices of Project NatureConnect. Greensong's offerings explore the biopsychosocial effects of nature on individuals and society. Greensong seeks to address the negative impacts of nature disconnection by fostering a stronger relationship with the natural world. This deeper connection helps cultivate healthier relationships to self and others, and encourages pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours.

Let's embrace the Natural Attraction concept that humans have natural, intuitive attractions to nature and vise-versa. By consciously engaging with these natural attractions (whether it’s a specific tree, a flower, a water element, or landscape), we can reestablish and deepen our connection to the environment and ourselves, and foster greater well-being. Let's envision a world where humans live in harmony with nature, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life.
